About the City

Gerardmer is a town in north-east of France, in the Lorraine region, the capital of Canton Vosges department in the arrondissement of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. Its population of 8845 inhabitants makes it the third largest town in the department. It owes its nickname of "Pearl of the Vosges" to Alfred Hugo, Victor Hugo’s brother.

Gerardmer is a true tourist trap. In winter, the town is transformed into a popular ski resort while in summer lakeside activities include walking, fishing, boat trips, sailing and water skiing.

Set on the shore of a magnificent lake and at the bottom of a colossal mountain, it is tourism that’s fast replacing the traditional textile industry. With water sports in the summer and skiing in winter it’s no wonder Gerardmer is a popular vacation spot.

Gerardmer is located in the eastern Vosges department, in the heart of the Hautes-Vosges, a few cable lengths away from Alsace and Germany.

Events

Gerardmer isn’t known for the quantity of events it offers, but more for the quality. The biggest event in Gerardmer is undoubtedly the international fantastic film festival which brings seemingly unending fan crowds of the genre.

Dining out in Gerardmer is a real treat. The town is gastronomically diverse, as food types range from fish, seafood and meat to cheese and even the Spanish tapas.

History and Civilization

The city is believed to have been founded by Gerard de Chatenois in the 11^th century, although written records of the town only date back to 1285 when the town’s name was Geramer.

The best season to visit a mountain resort would of course be winter. You can try the slopes or choose to ski cross country. But Gerardmer is also a popular summer spot as well, offering all sorts of water sports and activities by the lake.
